Blind Embossing
Light and Shadow
The embossing is the art of leaving things out. Clearly defined edges create an interplay of light and shadow. This is the uniqueness of blind embossings - without color.
Procedure
Experienced engravers manufacture a tool made out of brass. The master’s hand is irreplaceable even though we live in the age of space travel, nanotechnology and the like. According to a two-dimensional template (film) the engraver has an imagination of the 3D shape. His work is similar to that of a sculptor. The perfect die is just one half on the way to a perfect blind emossing. A matching counterpart that presses the substrate into every tiny detail of the die is needed. Still the best way to do this is by hand as well.
Use
There are almost no limits. Single or multi-level implementations of logos, images, relief or typo…
Do’s & Dont’s
A particular attention needs to be paid to the selection the substrate to be embossed. Natural fibrous papers and boards are very suitable - preferably with a share of rag (cotton fibers).
Often we see offset printed items that were blind embossed afterwards. In our view this is a suboptimal imitation of steel engraving. The dull offset color takes away this technique’s best results possible: light and shadow.
