Hot Foil Stamping
Bright Effects
Hot foil stamping was developed by book artist and bookbinders. Golden letters have always been an elegant way of decorating books. The legendary Heidelberg Tiegel (aka «Windmill») made the application of this technology possible and popular for commercial work.
Procedure
The die is manufactured with a patented etching process or alternatively with CNC maching. In case of complex motives the hand of a master engraver may be required. Using heat and pressure in the press, the metal or pigmented layer of the foil gets sealed onto the substrate.
Use
Strong effects are the domain of hot foil stamping. The range includes matte and shiny metallic surfaces, highly pigmented colors, textures and even holographic effect foils. A logo on a letterhead, a business card or a brochure’s cover shines with new luster.
Do’s & Dont’s
Great attention should be paid to laser printers. For a variety of metal stamping foils there are guarantees of the manufacturers. When it comes to pigmented foils one often enters new territory. For a production not turning into a surprise we strongly recommend testing the chosen foil on the specific substrate.
